Great trad music, barebones DVD September 30, 2008 Great performances by great traditional musicians, well-filmed -- essential if you like this sort of thing. This would be a five star DVD for me if the DVD packaging were a bit better -- my copy doesn't even have chapter breaks between songs. (Mine was one of the very first copies, since no one else mentions this it may have changed in later versions -- my copy does have a sheet with a bit of info on the performers and their URLs, which one of the other reviews here seems to miss.)
Answering questions from the other reviews, these performances were filmed at Goderich's The Livery (http://www.thelivery.ca) early in August 2001, using performers in town for the Celtic Roots Festival that weekend. They built an extended stage at the front of the small venue for the filming, and added the tables and audience to get an intimate atmosphere. (You can see my shiny head in the audience a couple of times during the Mahers Bahers set.)
To quickly give more info about the performers: Sean Keane (www.seankeane.com) is the great Irish singer from County Galway rather than the fiddler of the same name with the Chieftains. The Mahers Bahers (www.mahersbahers.com) are a group built around great old Newfoundland one-row button accordion player Frank Maher, backed by the duo of Christina Smith and Jean Hewson and bodhran player Rick West. (Note that their first number is misidentified -- it is actually a set of Newfoundland singles starting with "Coming from the Races" and "Bride's Jig".)
Simon Mayor & Hilary James (www.mandolin.co.uk) are a British duo built around Mayor's awe-inspiring mandolin playing. As I type this, you can actually find their portion of this DVD up at their website, albeit as very small Quicktime videos. Rich-voiced singer Bobby Watt (bobbywatt.com) is a native of Scotland, living in Canada since the 1970s.

While every transaction with Amazon has been flawless, this great dvd of a celtic festival in Goderich, Ontario, Canada was nice, but left me wanting more information on the artists who appeared on the DVD. Perhaps the festival promoters could write an enclosure for future DVDs telling a little about the performers; where they originated, how long they have been performing, contact information for individual performers, etc. I wished each performing solo or group talked a bit so I could learn more. However, the performances were varied and interesting, the sound was good and all left me wanting to know more. I will research the festival and hopefully attend future ones to find out what the DVD left me hungry for. I originally thought these were from the Celtic Colours festival in Nova Scotia, but enjoyed it nonetheless.

`Celtic Roots Festival, Vol. 1 is the first of three DVD's containing engaging live performances by marvelously gifted Celtic musicians and singers gathered in the Canadian town of Goderich. The festivities take place in what appears to be a large restaurant or sorts on a rather small stage beautifully decorated to awaken the Irish muse in all of us. A large Celtic cross, a rock wall, a standing stone or two and an assortment of brush and barren branches create the perfect atmosphere for what we are about to hear.
Contents: Sean Keane: If I Needed You / Isle of Hope / May Morning Dewz / Stoir Machree Mahers Bahers: Three Newfoundland Jigs / Sterling Castle-Belfast Hornpipe / Sweet Forget Me Not Simon Mayer & Hilary James: Jump the Gun-Reeling Over the Rooftops / Buttermere Waltz / Down the Road I'll Go / The Dark and Slender Boy Bobby Watt: I Once Loved A Lass / A Man's A Man For A'That / Jaimie Raeburn / Factory Girl / Remembrance Day
This is an absolutely wonderful production. The cameras are as close to the performers as possible providing an intimate feel to the evening. You almost feel as though you're on-stage with them. Truly a magical listening and viewing experience! Don't forget to buy vol. 2 & 3 as well.
